Renaissance at New York Academy of Music - May 17 1974

Famous concert at New York Academy of Music on May 17th 1974, featuring Howard Stein conducting an unnamed 24-piece orchestra and simulcast on WNEW-FM -- the station's second-ever simulcast.

According to Annie (quoted in the program), this was the band's first live performance with an orchestra.

Anybody here attend?

There were actually two identical shows that evening.  The early show was the one broadcast.  I attended the midnight show and it was blissful.  I remember a real buzz in the crowd that night and the band themselves seemed really pleased.  I imagine they felt they had really arrived as a big time act.

The show was sensational and there is a really high quality boot of it around the net.  This was the first time they were performing many of the great songs from TOTC.  The addition of the orchestra and the appearance of Andy Powell really made it special.  Maybe my most fondly remembered concert.

My heart breaks looking at these scans.  I kept my copy for years but lost it to a flooded basement.  But nice to be able to see it again.  Many thanks.

It was the same night of the famous shoot out in San Francisco with Patty Hearst.
